A Life in Cars

AboutMartin Short and Rollcentre

Born 1959, in RAF El Adem, a Royal Air Force base in Libya, Martin has spent most of his life either in or around St. Ives in Cambridgeshire, where he lives with his wife Michelle and sons Morgan and Marcus.  This is where Rollcentre Racing is based - living on the job!  Martin runs his twin businesses from his custom built factory unit, which is the headquarters for Rollcentre Racing and Mosler UK.

Martin's Ambitions....

...  within motor racing were to race at Le Mans and to become a member of the BRDC. He  realised both these dreams, with thanks to his team and co-drivers at Rollcentre Racing, but there are always new ambitions and championships to achieve.

1987 - 1989

1987 - I started racing at club level at the age of 27, winning the BRSCC Kitcar Championship in my first year! Founded Rollcentre, building roll cages for various clients including McLaren for F1 GT car.

1988 - 4th Place in Top Gear Formula First Winter Series & 11th Place in a field of 60 cars in the Cellnet Formula First Championship.

Brief single seater career - soon give up (too dangerous even for me!)

2017

We took part in British GT, with Richard Nearys brand new Mercedes GT3. It was a fraught year sadly, with too many crashes, caused by outside influences. A couple of 24 Hour races as well.

2018

We looked after various historic cars, including our ex Sister Dallara to the one showed here in Masters Endurance Legends. Martins own Oreca Dallara Judd SP1 car took part at the end of 2017 in the Masters Endurance legends first race (at Spa), and then again in 2018 at Brands hatch and Silverstone Classic, winning class on all 3 occasions.

2019

The majority of 2019 was spent supporting Motus One, looking after their client, Brabham Automotive. Martin had his quietest racing year since 1986 (!) and did only two races, though one was a rather special one, with his son Morgan having his first race in the Mighty C1 in the 24 Hours. With their fellow drivers Ian Stinton and Graham Coomes, they got up to 4th, however a blown engine resulted in slipping down the order, but it was great fun. The other was in the TVR Tuscan pictured below at Combe for the 30th Anniversary of the race series.

2020

We hope to be doing more with the TVR Tuscan, Moslers, Radicals, Brabham and who knows what :)
